Support the training of young African geologists.
Peter Spora worked as an exploration geologist for more than 25 years and was involved in the generation, discovery, and definition of significant gold deposits in Australia and Africa. He also acted as a mentor to many young geologists and professionals. The Spora's Explorers Fund has been established by the SEG Foundation at the request of Peter Spora's friends, family and colleagues, in honour of Peter’s memory to support young African geologists—students or early career professionals.
Peter firmly believed that geology was best taught and learned in the field, with a map, a hand lens and a hammer, and that every geologist should have the opportunity to be exposed to as much geology as possible. While Peter is no longer here to encourage the next generation himself, the Spora's Explorers Fund will continue his mission and allow students and early career professionals in Africa to pursue a career in geology with passion.
Your donations will contribute towards the fund, which will be used by successful candidates to support thesis research and field work, defray tuition costs and university fees. In addition, the fund will also offset costs for recipients of the fund to be able to attend professional events organized through the SEG, including international field work, conference, classes, and site visits, which are important in the development of a career in geology.
